Shape and pressing

A formation like 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 isn't just a lineup — it's a claim about where a team wants the ball. A high press tries to win it back in the opponent's third, trading defensive risk for shorter routes to goal. A low block cedes territory to protect the box, betting on a smaller number of higher-quality chances. Neither is "correct"; the right shape depends on the squad's legs, the opponent's buildup patterns, and the stakes of the specific match.

Over a season, these choices don't show up in a play-by-play the model can see — they show up in results. A team that presses well concedes fewer clean look and racks up goal difference; a team whose low block holds tends to grind out 1-0s. Both strategies can produce points on the table, but they produce very different shapes of results.

Points, goal difference, and recent form come straight from results, and Elo adjusts a team's rating up or down based on who they actually beat. A team whose tactics are working shows up as rising form and goal difference before most observers would call it a trend.

Set pieces and squad depth

A meaningful share of goals in any given season come from corners and free kicks — a well-drilled routine, a target forward who wins first contact, a keeper who's a genuine threat at the other end. This is one of the clearest places where individual quality (not system) decides matches, which is also why squad depth matters: a team missing its best set-piece taker or aerial threat to injury or rotation loses more than one player's minutes.

How the model reads thisSquad quality feeds the model's "class" factor — built from public squad-value and player-quality data, kept separate from form and points so a strong team having a rough month doesn't get mistaken for a weak one. It's the model's proxy for depth and individual quality that raw results alone wouldn't fully capture yet.

The draw is its own outcome

Unlike most American sports, soccer's standard market has three outcomes, not two — home win, away win, or draw. That changes the shape of the prediction problem: a tight, cagey match between two evenly matched sides isn't just "hard to call," it's often genuinely more likely to end level than to break either way. Low-scoring, low-variance matchups push probability toward the draw column in a way that a two-outcome sport never has to model.

Fixture congestion in continental competitions

A club playing Champions League or Europa League football is often playing twice a week for months — domestic league, then a midweek continental fixture, then league again. Rotation becomes a tactical decision in itself: rest key players for a bigger game later, or risk fatigue compounding across a congested stretch. Squads with real depth absorb this better than squads leaning on a settled first XI.

How the model reads thisRest days between fixtures is a direct input — teams coming off a short turnaround get a small penalty, teams with a full week to prepare get a small boost, calibrated to soccer's normal weekly rhythm rather than a fixed number of days.

Home advantage

Home advantage in soccer is real and well-documented — crowd noise affecting referee decisions, travel fatigue for the visitors, familiarity with the pitch — and it's larger, proportionally, than in most American sports. It's also not uniform: a raucous away end at a tightly-built ground matters more than a half-empty stadium.

How the model reads thisHome advantage is a fixed weight added to the home side's strength score before anything else is layered on — sized specifically for soccer's scoring environment, distinct from the smaller home-field weights used for football, basketball, or hockey elsewhere on Matchday.
