Special teams swing games

A power play converts a numbers advantage into goals; a penalty kill denies it. Over an 82-game season, teams with efficient special teams consistently outperform their 5-on-5 play alone would suggest — a single power-play goal can be the entire margin in a league where a large share of games are decided by one goal.

How the model reads thisScoring margin captures the downstream effect of special teams (and everything else) without needing to isolate the cause — a team that consistently wins the special-teams battle shows up as better goal differential, which feeds the model directly.

Back-to-backs and goalie rotation

NHL teams routinely play back-to-back nights, and it's common practice to start a backup goaltender on the second night to protect the starter's health over an 82-game grind. That's a real, planned quality drop at the sport's most influential position, on a schedule pattern that's largely predictable in advance.

How the model reads thisRest days is a direct input, calibrated for hockey's tight schedule — even one extra day matters here, similar to basketball.

Why hockey upsets are routine

Hockey has a flatter talent curve and more single-game variance than most major sports — a bad bounce off the end boards, a shot that clips a skate, a hot goaltender standing on his head for sixty minutes can single-handedly erase a real talent gap. That's part of what makes the sport exciting, and it's also why the NHL's regular-season standings are famously tighter than other leagues'.

How the model reads thisThe opponent-adjusted rating and Elo both help separate real quality from a single night's variance by looking at results over many games rather than any one outcome, which matters more in a sport this prone to single-game randomness.

NHL has Matchday's one real injury data source

Missing a top-line center or a starting goaltender is one of the clearest, most direct signals in hockey — arguably more decisive than in most other sports, given how much a single elite goaltender can single-handedly change a team's odds.

How the model reads thisThe NHL is currently the only sport on Matchday with real, licensed player-availability data feeding the model's injuries factor. Every other American sport on the platform either has no accessible injury data at any usable tier, or the source hasn't been verified as compliant to use yet — worth knowing if you're comparing how much weight to put on an NHL prediction versus, say, an NFL one.
